I took a look at the website and was unimpressed, I don't plan to play it.

Missin' out. It's good fun. Bioware's claim about it being the "spiritual successor" to Baldur's Gate is a little off. But it's still pretty damn good. Although, I'm only five or so hours in.

Skipping one of the best games of the year and the first real return to Baldur's Gate / Planescape: Torment style gameplay because of a picture of an enemy on GameSpot?
...

I was originally planning on missing out because:
1. EA is making it.
2. I'm not much of a fan of bioware storylines anymore and I need a break.
3a. I'm not really in the mood for a western RPG right now.
3b. If I were I'd finish NWN2 or oblivion.
4. I've got some other games on my list to play right now.

Released in America yesterday, some people got it early, pirates got it even earlier for the 360. Not sure about the Euro release, they keep doing funny things with it.

Don't. Really. Even if you have no other choice.
Playing DA:O on either console is asking for pain and rage. 360 version looks ugly, both 360 and PS3 versions play like crap. It's a PC game through and through.

Some graphics comparisons here. For gameplay I can't really show you pictures, but the console versions are significantly easier and dumbed down (less enemies, no friendly fire in Normal, and the like), partially due to the locking of your view to third person.
Plus, there will be no user created content for the consoles. That alone is a HUGE reason to go PC or go home. NWN lasted for as long as it did because of the plethora of well planned user created scenarios; PC DA:O will get similar content, but the console gamers will find little to do in the game once they play through it with each class and race.

Not really - it takes a different approach. Pause and Command combat is still the most effective way to fight, as with older CRPGs, but the D&D roots have been trimmed for a simpler system to determine damage and whatnot (which saddens the tabletop nerd in me, but c'est la vie). If I had to draw a comparison to another genre in order to best explain how this game plays, I'd say it's very close to an MMO, with the addition of pausing and subtraction of failures that don't know how to do their jobs right and cause you to wipe. If you don't like pausing after every few seconds to command your party members, you can set up pre-determined priorities for them similar to the gambits of FF, and just run around with your main character mashing skills when you wish. Not the most effective way to do battle, but it does work most of the time, and is there if you want to use it.
To be honest, I can't imagine anyone who liked Guild Wars not enjoying Dragon Age. And.. I guess, if someone had no other option than playing it on a console, I wouldn't dream of stopping them - so long as, if they didn't like the experience they had, they didn't go home with the idea that the game itself is bad because of the way it had to be overly simplified to work on the platform. It's certainly worth the money either way, but from the point of view of a Baldur's Gate player, the console version is very close to being filth.

I read a review that said it wasn't a ground breaking game, but if you liked it's predecessors you will most likely like DA.

Oblivion is on my shelf collecting dust, DA:O isn't.
